One focus of Polymet Jena lies in the innovative field of novel natural polymers and sustainable materials. This includes the rapidly expanding field of nanocellulose, combining the valuable properties of the biopolymer cellulose with the specific parameters of materials with nanostructure.
Through intensive research and development of the last 5 years there is now such an advanced state of knowledge in this field, we, together with colleagues from Sweden and Canada, have written a review article titled "Nanocelluloses: A new family of natural-based materials" for the journal Angewandte Chemie - one of the most important journals in the field of chemistry. We have co-founded this area and have experience in our own R & D work.
In the article the production, structure, properties, and applications of wood-based Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC), Nanocrystalline Cellulose (NCC) and Bacterial Nanocellulose (BNC) are described and the current state including literature as well as future developments are discussed.
